Register for Oct 2 Santa Barbara-based Forum for Disaster Preparedness

8/25/2014

It is time to REGISTER for the October 2 Forum for Disaster Preparedness, cohosted by ICTG and SBC VOAD, and focused on "Strengthening Partnerships."

Following last year's successful forum that introduced long-term recovery and emotional/spiritual care after trauma, this year's event will provide practical information for your faith-based or community-based organization in taking next steps for coordinated response after natural destruction or mass-violence.

We are honored to hear from expert speakers, Rev. David Myers, Director of the Department of Homeland Security's Center for Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships, and Brie Loskota, from USC's Center for Religion and Civic Culture.  They will share about current joint projects around the country and in SoCal among faith-based and community-based partners.

Beyond the speakers, we will host table-top discussions for networking, active learning and creating ways for Santa Barbara County to model preparedness and whole-community care after disaster.

This event is FREE to participants and will provide light breakfast, lunch, and refreshments throughout the day.  Register as soon as possible to ensure supplies available.  Do invite colleagues, and encourage them to register soon as well.

National Catholic Reports on How Clergy Sustain Peaceful Response in Ferguson

8/22/2014

The following is a brief excerpt from National Catholic Reporter Robyn Haas' coverage of current events in Ferguson. To read more and learn more about NCR, visit their website.

Clergy and religious leaders from many cities and many faiths are joining their local counterparts in Ferguson, Mo., becoming an increasingly visible presence and calling for justice while working to calm tension on the street.

On Wednesday, a group of around 100 religious leaders gathered at a community center in Clayton, Mo., for a half-mile march to the office of St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCullough to deliver a statement. The group is seeking an expedited grand jury hearing and the arrest of Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson, along with the assignment of a special prosecutor to the case. On the way, the group echoed the phrase that has been a central part of the story in Ferguson, “Hands up, don’t shoot!”

Gathered in front of the prosecutor’s office, clergy and community leaders called for justice and transparency in the investigation of the shooting of Michael Brown by Wilson on Aug. 9. “We are deeply concerned that the people of St. Louis county have been systematically denied due process of the law because of race,” their statement read. The leaders called for people of all races to work together to end injustice, saying that they were gathered “to demonstrate that this is not just something that affects the African-American community.”

Following the march, the group returned to Ferguson to join other demonstrators . . .

Attention Worship Leaders: Call for Hymns in times of Crisis

8/7/2014

Recently, the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, announced a task force for creating an easily accessible resource online for finding hymns for times of crisis.  This much-need project today will no-doubt be a valuable resource for worship leaders.

Please see this invitation if you are aware of meaningful hymns that ought to be part of this library.
